The British Manipulation Of Palestinian Demographics
When we talk about the Palestinian issue, our minds often turn to a religious dispute spanning thousands of years. We are fed with daily news of war and heartbreaking casualty statistics. However, the truth is that the Palestinian-Zionist conflict is not an ancient religious war.
Factually and historically, it is a modern European settler-colonial project that was imported, funded and protected by the machinery of the British Empire. Let’s peel back the layers of history and uncover how an empire successfully engineered demographics and ‘stole’ a sovereign nation.
The Myth of an Empty Land Without a People
Zionist propaganda often peddles a popular slogan to the world: Palestine is a land without a people for a people without a land. Historical facts completely reject this lie. For exactly 400 years under the Ottoman Empire (1517-1917), Palestine was not a deserted and abandoned wasteland.
According to the Palestinian historian, Aref al-Aref, this region was highly vibrant with cross-continental trade and agriculture. More importantly, it had a very stable social structure where Muslims, Christians, and a local Jewish minority lived peacefully side by side. The colonial ambition began as early as 1838 when the British opened their first consulate office in Baitul Maqdis. It was not merely a standard diplomatic relation; instead, it became an intelligence center and the first step for foreign infiltration.
Did the Palestinians Really Sell Their Own Land?
This is the most cruel myth often thrown around, the claim that Palestinians were greedy for money and voluntarily sold their own homeland to the Zionists. Demographic data in 1918, at the beginning of the British occupation, proves the absolute majority of the Palestinian population was Arab (92%), while the Jewish population was only 8%.
In-depth research by historian Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh reveals a shocking fact: by the time of the British withdrawal in 1948, the total land successfully controlled by Zionists was only about 1.2 million dunams. This figure represents merely 4.5% to 6% of the entire map of historic Palestine. How could a people who still held power over 94% of their own land be accused of selling out their country?
In reality, the vast majority of that 6% of land was acquired through the administrative deceit of the British Mandate. The British abused their power by confiscating state-owned land (‘Miri’) and giving it away for free to Zionist agencies. They also provided incentives to foreign aristocratic feudal landlords living abroad, such as in Lebanon and Syria, to sell their properties. Indigenous Palestinian farmers who had rented and cultivated the land for generations were then ruthlessly evicted by British police.

To complete this colonization plan, the British played aggressive diplomatic tricks. During World War I, the British promised Arab leaders that Palestine would be recognized as an independent Arab state if they helped fight the Ottomans. However, through the Balfour Declaration in November 1917, the British betrayed that promise by officially supporting the establishment of a National Home for the Jewish people in Palestine.
When the British received the mandate to administer Palestine, they did not guide the local population towards independence. Instead, they ruled with an iron fist. By the end of 1947, the climax of this injustice was punctuated on the international stage. The United Nations (UN) passed Resolution 181, a highly irrational partition plan. Even though the Jewish community at the time owned less than 6% of the land, the UN proposed handing over 54% of Palestinian territory to form the Israeli entity. The Arab majority, conversely, was allocated only 45% of the land.
The indigenous population’s rejection of this biased plan led to the eruption of the an-Nakbah (The Great Catastrophe) tragedy in 1948. In this ethnic cleansing campaign, more than 800,000 Palestinians (58% of the population) were killed or driven out of their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and 478 villages were wiped off the world map forever.

The history of Islamic administration in Baitul Maqdis has long proven the success of the Aman Theory. Through the al-Uhdah al-Umariyah (Umar’s Assurance of Safety) treaty signed by Caliph Umar al-Khattab in 637 CE, the rights and properties of multi-religious communities were protected, creating an equitable model of coexistence for Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Baitul Maqdis’s significance is elevated not just as a physical border, but as the spiritual center of the Barakah Circle for world peace.
